How do you handle time commitments for volunteers and volunteers who can only offer part of a time block?

Many of our chair people cannot attend a regular monthly board meeting so we ask them to submit an email update to the President (me).  Several of our committees are co-chaired so that the burden is not on one person.  As President, I try to make sure that I am available to help and provide support at any time, especially to new volunteers.

In reference to events, we try to schedule in 1 hour time blocks if possible. That way no one is there too long and they can enjoy the event as well.  We also pull volunteers from the local high school and ROTC. We're surrounded by military bases and many service members need volunteer hours for their annual performance evaluations.
